Pietra d'Avola | Raw

“I worked with Gabriele Salvatori on a surface treatment for marble, to increase and extend the rough cut of pieces of stone. What we got was a series of stones cut like pieces of wood, transforming the precise, mechanical cut into a rough cut, creating an “engraved” effect on the surface of the marble. We revolutionized the technological element, turning it into a hand-crafted process, and the result was an even surface, which might be (for example) laid tongue and groove, like parquet” -Piero Lissoni-

Designed by Piero Lissoni, Raw represents the ruggedness of hewn wood, translated in stone to create a nuanced play of light and shadow. Raw can be installed both vertically and horizontally.

The process which creates Raw tiles is designed to preserve the natural aesthetic qualities of the stone.
As a result of this, the tiles may not be perfectly identical, however this non-uniformity is intrinsic both to the texture and the natural stone itself.

Available in Bianco Carrara, Crema d'Orcia, Pietra d'Avola and Silk Georgette®.

Good to Know:
Raw tiles come in two configurations:
Packed in crates containing an equal mix of three different lengths which we call strips.
Packed in crates containing a uniform size of tile.

A note about lighting:
Lighting is a key component which significantly enhances the beauty of Raw. The key to great lighting is that it should “wash” down or across the surface, depending whether the lines run horizontally or vertically. We strongly recommend you consider the placement of lighting when installing Raw.

Ideally we recommend the following:
• When working with adjustable lighting, install the light source no more than 60 cm away from the Raw surface
• If the light is fixed, the light source should be a maximum of 30 cm away.

More information

You will immediately notice when your Pietra d’Avola tiles arrive that they will have a grey colour rather than the lovely rich brown of the samples you have probably seen.
This is because we do not treat it before it leaves our premises, as it is better done once installed, ideally with an enhancing product which will bring out the intense brown colour.
We recommend FILASTONE PLUS for this.

Pietra d’Avola is a compact material with a very low absorbency coefficient.
As a result most of the water-oil-repellent products on the market are too dense for it as they tend to create a film on the surface of the stone which can be difficult to remove.
This is another reason we recommend FILASTONE PLUS for Pietra d’Avola.

IMPORTANT NOTE
If you are installing Pietra d’Avola in an area where it will be frequently exposed to water, if you apply FILASTONE PLUS as recommended above, you will not require any further water-repellent treatment product.
Please DO NOT use any water sealant product such as FILA HYDROREP in combination with STONE PLUS.
It is not necessary and, in fact, may be detrimental to both the effectiveness of the treatment and the stone’s aesthetic.

The images shown on this page are indicative of the colour and characteristics of our products but cannot be 100% representative. Being made from natural materials, every tile or slab is unique in terms of tonality, colour and characteristic. These are all subject to variation depending on the type of stone and the conditions in the quarry from where it comes.

Our stone leaves the factory untreated as the level and type of treatment will always depend on the context in which the stone is laid. With each order we provide detailed installation instructions setting out directions for grouting, pre-treatment, gluing and final treatment.
